Summer Classes

We're starting a new series of classes for beginners and pre-intermediates! Fun, educational, and manageable in a series of 4 lessons on Monday evenings in September. You can now register for one or both groups: beginners++ and/or pre-intermediates. You're welcome to attend the first lesson on September 2nd as a trial class (€5). If you decide to continue with the lessons, the amount will be deducted when you register.

Teacher and assistent

Partner dances, region-specific dances, more (or less) traditional... bring it on! Saskia Sportel has been teaching balfolk for over 10 years, both in the Netherlands and abroad. Saskia considers differences in learning styles important, so she always tries to take them into account and provide as much personal attention as possible. Personal safety and a secure group feeling are essential for this. Saskia’s teaching style is often described as open, clear, and refreshing. The goal is to have fun, both during the workshop and on the dance floor.

The Lesson Levels

Beginner group

In this series of beginner classes, we start with the basics of dancing. You'll learn the steps and dance posture for several dances, enabling you to hit the dance floor with ease and enjoyment. Think of dances like the mazurka, waltz, polka, rondeau en couple. We'll also work on dance posture and steps, for instance, in the scottish. Depending on the time and the group, we'll add more dances. No prior dance experience is needed, and you don't need to bring your own dance partner. This short series of lessons is a great follow-up to the previous beginner classes and is also suitable for new participants. These lessons are also ideal for those who have attended a ball before but haven't taken any lessons yet.

Pre-Intermediate group

In the pre-intermediate classes, we build on the basics we already know and add new elements. We'll learn more about leading and following, connection in dance, and we'll introduce variations, both rhythmic variations and those involving turns or changes in direction. Think of dances like the scottish, mazurka, polka, waltz, 'rondeau en couple' or 'en chaine', and the bourrée in 3. To take this course, you should have some dance experience, perhaps from a previous series of lessons or workshops, and you should at least know the basic steps of the scottish, mazurka, and waltz. This series can also be enjoyable if you've been dancing for a while but want to practice in another role (leader/follower) with guidance.

Of course, it may be that you don’t know which series is exactly right for you. How quickly you learn and especially how often you dance outside of lessons can make a huge difference. Please send an email to utrecht@balfolk.nl to explain your situation, and we would be happy to help you.

What does it cost?

Payment is made in cash. Trial lesson only costs €5. A series of lessons costs:

Agenda

Location

The address of the Moira is Wolvenstraat 10 (you walk into it at the end of the Plompetorengracht), but it is a large building. The door you need is the blue one on the right, with “Moira hall” in pink letters. Then you come down to the hall via the stairs. Unfortunately there is no elevator. .
